Blogging Wars – WordPress Vs Blogger
There’s a war going on in the blogosphere, and it has nothing to do with bloggers dissing each other on their respective websites. The war is about control of the blogosphere by several great, many good, and tons of terrible blogging platforms. The average newbie now has “too many” options to choose from, and the battle for blogging supremacy is hotter than ever.
At my website and blogs, I’m always asked the question “Is WordPress better than Blogger?”. The answer, of course, is “Yes”. But to really understand why, it’s important to look at both blogging platforms side-by-side and see which one you really need.
You also need to understand that there are different versions of WordPress, the earliest now termed as “WordPress” at WordPress.org, and the hosted version similar to Blogger now termed “WordPress.com” which is of course available WordPress.com. Only the latter comes with free hosting on a sub-domain account. We’ll discuss this in Part 2.
For Part 1 of this article, we look only at the self-hosted version of WordPress. Here’s the comparison scale:
1) Ease of Set-up And Use
Yes, it’s much easier to set-up a blog with Blogspot.com and get your own Bloggger account. You can be done in 10 minutes flat. Once you’re set-up you can start posting immediately. If you want to add a designer’s touch to your blog, there are also tons of blogger templates available for free.
Installing WordPress however can be a major headache if you don’t know what you’re doing. Since you’re going to host it on your own account, you’ll need to download the installation files, upload them to your server, set-up a database, and run the configuration script.
However, if you know which hosting account to get, you can choose one with Cpanel included. With Cpanel, you can do a one-click installation, upgrade and removal of your WordPress platform.
2) Customization & Advanced Use
Blogger doesn’t allow categories. You can’t sort your articles into different focuses, unless you know how to hack the platform. With WordPress, not only can you add categories, you can also display each category differently on your main page. In fact with the correct plugins you can even turn your WordPress into a magazine-like portal.
Publishing with Blogger can extremely furstrating. It can take forever to post articles, especially if you’re making changes to the entire website. With WordPress, publishing is much faster, although if you load your system with all kinds of bells and whistles it can be just as frustrating.
With a Blogger account, you can get additional features like “Shout Boxes” that improve interaction on your site. You can also get pretty themes and nifty little tools that you can add to the core template files. However, that’s as far as you can go with Blogger.
With WordPress however, the sky is the limit. As cliche as that may sound, not only can you get themes, additional “plugins” and advanced tools, you can also extend WordPress to far beyond just a blogging platform.
The talk today is about using WordPress as a complete, user-friendly Content Management System or CMS. Unlike complicated predecessors like PHPPostNuke, B2, Mambo or even Joomla, WordPress is user friendly. Plus, the availability of source codes in this open-source system coupled with a strong community makes it possible to use WordPress as an article management system, classifieds system, direct-selling site and even a paid membership site.
4) Copyrights and Ownership of Content
I started with Blogger and I won’t say that it’s bad. But after a while I started to get frustrated with Blogger, and here’s why: Google Owns Your Content
Google has the authority to shut down your account without warning if they don’t like what you’re blogging about. You don’t have absolute control over your own blog. With WordPress, you own the domain name and the blog is hosted on your own account. You have full control over your content.
With the self-hosted version of WordPress (not WordPress.com), you’re free to write about anything you want, and use the software in any way you want. Yes, Blogger allows you to publish to your own domain, but they still own the database that holds your content! Don’t forget that!
5) Search Engine Optimization and Traffic
There’s this propaganda that since Google owns Blogger, they tend to favor Blogger accounts. I won’t say that this is illogical, but from my experience, there’s no such favoritism.
I’ve heard as many stories of getting indexed fast and ranking high in search engines from both WordPress and Blogger users. As long as the content is good, the spiders will come.
When you post in Blogger, you can only “ping” a limited amount of sites, whereas with WordPress on your own domain you can ping as many blog directories as you want, and start getting more traffic.
As a conclusion, I would say that WordPress is only slightly ahead in terms of optimization for search engines, and building large amounts of traffic.
6) Money-Making Potential
There’s no doubt that it’s easier to get started with Google Adsense if you have a Blogger account. In fact you can now apply for Adsense from within a Blogger account. Not entirely surprising considering the fact that both are owned by the same company.
With WordPress, it can get tricky. The default installation is not enough. You’ll need a couple of plugins and even a better theme to really maximize the Adsense potential. However, this seems to be getting easier and there’s even “Adsense revenue sharing” plugins around that allow you to share ad revenue with other contributors and writers for your blog.
When you start using WordPress to build your Adsense websites, you’ll soon discover what I mean. It’s something you need to experience for yourself. I can tell you one thing though – when you go WordPress, you don’t go back.

Five Proven Ways To Get Links
Getting one of the top spots in Google search results is extremely important if you are a internet marketer as there is nothing more attractive than free of charge targeted visitors. The primary element is getting top position with the search engines is the amount of links which are directing to your website. It is that simple, the more links you have, the higher your ranking will be and the more quality links you will get, than your road to top search engine spot will be clear.
You can use a variety of methods and techniques so that you can build backlinks to your internet site. I can not review all of the ways you can use and implement so that you can gain backlinks, but I can tell you about the most frequent ones:
1. Social Network – Sites like Squidoo, WordPress, Blogger and Hubpages are called Social Networking sites and I am sure you are familiar with them. If not, I guess you where living on the moon or you did not have an internet connection until now. You care sign up for free with all of these sites and create your own pages, posting your content and adding links to your site You need to understand that Google sees these sites as high authority and they all have a very high Page Rank so it is very common that pages on these sites get to the top ranking in the search engines. You need to start using these sites and create pages and adding links to your own site as these links are very good quality in the eyes of Google and not doing them is simply wrong
2. Social Bookmark Sites – Another great way to obtain a good amount of high quality backlinks is by using social bookmark sites such as Delicious, Stumbleupon and Technorati. Google really likes these websites and will detect your backlinks sooner when utilizing these sites.
3. Article Marketing – This mehod is time consuming but the links are of the hightest quality and if you consistently write articles and put your link in the author boxes linking back to your site and submit to noumerous article directories such as EzineArticles, GoArticles and ArticleBase. You can see for yourself that many articles are ranking high with Google and if you will write compelling content many webmasters will use your articles and your links will grow and you site will climb up the ranking ladder.
4. Posting Comments In Blogs – These another oldie but always good, but you must make sure that the blogs you are commenting on have Do Follow links, cause otherwise those links will simply be overlooked by Google and will not help you in the rankings. You must write quality comments and be sure to add valuable information and not spam those blogs due to the fact that your comments will need to be approved by the blog webmaster. Each approved comment is another backlink to your site so just think how many you can get using this method. In order to make the most out of this method, try posting your comments on high PR (Page Rank) blogs, over PR 3 is great as these links will have more weight with Google.
5. Forum Profiles & Signatures – Find related forums in your niche and register to them in order to add your website URL and post links in the signature.. You do not want to spam your link in the forum because you will end up being banned and therefore lose all the backlinks you created. All the search engines will see these links as backlinks and you don’t even need to add posts in forums, you will get a link simply from your profile page, but the more posts you will have in each forum, the more links you will get.
These are great and proven methods for getting backlinks and all of them will work if used correctly. The only drawback on these techniques is that they all take some time and require lots of work. If you don’t have the time or the will to work for you links, you can use Link networks and pay for getting backlinks for your site. There are services and courses out there that can get you or at least teach you how to get top position in Google in just a few days.
Not to date myself but I used to hand code websites way back in the olden days of the internet (15 years ago) and I’ve seen plenty of changes come down the line when it comes to website construction tools. Many of the everyday WYSIWYG web design programs in use now would have seemed miraculous to me when I was sweating bullets over HTML 1.0. Now a whole new paradigm of website design and development tools has come over the horizon, changing the way websites will be constructed in the future. Content Management Systems, or CMS appears to be the wave of the future when it comes to developing your next website, but as it is with all new technologies, it’s hard to choose which of the new and sparsely tested technologies out there are best suited to your individual needs. Sure, they each claim to be able to provide almost everything for almost anyone, though you have to wonder if most of that talk is just marketing hype.
First off, for the uninitiated; what is a Content Management System and do I even need one? The Content Management Systems we will be discussing are Web Content Management Systems, or WCMS. A WCMS is a web publishing system that allows even users with little or no technical skill update, manage and modify a website. Depending on the type of WCMS you choose to use even unskilled web managers can theoretically add interactive functions and employ complex scripting functions that were previously only possible through computer code programming. Simply put, with a well-implemented and robust WCMS even your grandmother could run your website. But how do you know which WCMS is best for you and Granny?
The good thing is that all the top three contenders for the WCMS crown are not only free but open source as well. This means that developers around the world are able to use, test and modify each WCMS individually to see how it suits their own needs and tastes. Of course not everyone has the time to put each of these complex tools through all the paces so we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each for you here. Hopefully we can help you make up your mind and save you some time.
* WordPress
The most widely used and most well-known WCMS WordPress was originally released in 2003 and is now used in 2% of the top 10,000 websites. Using a template based architecture WordPress has found vast popularity as a blogging platform which requires minimal set-up and maintenance. The popularity of the WordPress WCMS has encouraged developers worldwide to create thousands of plugins which can easily be installed to help expand the capabilities of your website.
While it is so extensive and has the greatest number of users WordPress does have technical limitations which make it possibly not the best choice for websites with heavy reliance on highly technical functions, such as shopping carts. The open source nature of the WordPress architecture can occasionally be a liability, with plugin conflicts or version compatibility issues being a frequent complaint of users. What WordPress excels at is a quick learning curve, a very easy control system, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of templates. It is also the simplest WCMS to install and configure. In a nutshell, WordPress is for you if all you’re looking to do is blog and it’s something Grandma should be able to master in just a few quick lessons.
* Drupal
A variation of the Dutch word for ‘drop’ (druppel) this robust and widely-used system is considered the most technically advanced and correspondingly complicated WCMS. While it might not have the ease of implementation found with WordPress it makes up for it’s challenging nature with renowned reliability and respected security strength. Estimates claim that at least 1% of the worlds websites use some aspect of the Drupal WCMS, including such notable sites as whitehouse.gov , data.gov.uk and fastcompany.com.
Drupal has a very active community of open-source developers despite it’s relatively steep learning curve and level of complexity. Web Designers favor the flexibility the Drupal architecture gives them and developers find Drupal’s SEO capabilities highly favorable.
Drupal does seem to hold all the cards when it comes to performance and scalability but many amateur web developers find the level of technical skill required to get the most out of this WCMS consumes more time than it ultimately saves, particularly on less sophisticated web projects.
* Joomla
The relative new-comer to the WCMS field is the fast expanding and infinitely flexible Joomla, which adherents claim to be as complex and functional as Drupal, but with the ease of use of WordPress. Undoubtedly, Joomla has attracted a following of dedicated open-source developers, and in a relatively short time has amassed an impressive number of plug-ins and a staggering number of templates.
On the downside however some of Joomla’s most attractive features are not available for free, requiring the purchase of ‘modules’ to expand the funtionality of the core system. Though Joomla users contend the small cost of modules is much less than the cost of hiring experienced programmers to set up a Drupal architecture.
Joomla is therefore the ‘middle-road’ chosen by web designers and developers who are looking to make easy to manage sites that have only a above-average need for technical sophistication.
PHP web development refers to the web development done using the PHP server-side scripting language. Although you can promote both physical and digital products, I prefer the latter as they typically pay more commissions and are easier to sell. Here are a few ways that I have personally used to make $500 – $2,000 in sales of affiliate products every month from my blog:
1) Interview The Product Owner
Who better to answer questions and clarify doubts on a certain product than the owner himself? By arranging for an interview with the owner or a representative, you get to be the middle-man and ask the most important question on behalf of your blog readers.
You can conduct interview easily using Skype and a recording software that integrates with it. Once recorded, you need to do some minor editing using Audacity, a free audio editing software. If you’re using WordPress as your blog platform, you can easily install some podcasting plugins and get the whole thing up easily.
The key to selling affiliate products using podcast interviews is to ask the right questions. It works much better if you’ve already bought and used the product, so you’re familiar with how it works and any limitations it has.
During the interview itself, make sure you mention your affiliate link. Also write a short description of the podcast on your blog post and put your affiliate link there.
2) Write a Complete Product Review
This is not something new, but it’s rarely done by most of the new affiliate marketers I’ve come across promoting my own products and other people’s products that I happen to be promoting as well.
A product review is not a sales pitch, so avoid making it sound like you’re totally in love with the product. If it’s really that good, maintain your enthusiasm but do let your readers know on it’s limitations as well.
To increase the clicks on your affiliate links, include screenshots of the product (if it’s a software) to let people get an insider’s view of how it works and the results that can expect from it.
If it’s an e-book or information product, let others know the results you’ve observed and recorded from using the techniques or secrets mentioned. Everyone loves something that works, but most people will wait to see if it works for others before deciding to buy it.
3) Presell With a “How To” Article
A “How To” article teaches people how to solve a specific problem or achieve a specific result. In your article, start with the problem or desired outcome, and give specific step and action that need to be taken to solve it.
Somewhere towards the end of the article, mention about how a specific software can help your readers automate or skip some of the steps mentioned in your article. Once people have discovered the solution, they still may not want to do it all by themselves. If the software you’re talking about helps them do it faster or easier, they will definitely consider buying it.
Your goal is to presell the benefit of using the software, and lead them to the affiliate product page. Don’t make your article a sales pitch or this method will not work as well. People want to buy, but they don’t want to be “sold”.
Try to work on a WordPress platform as your blogging tool, as it allows you much more control and flexibility in promoting affiliate products, especially when your “catalog” of affiliate products grows significantly.
Using these three strategies alone, you can make a significant income promoting affiliate products. Focus on these and affiliate marketing from your blog becomes so easy you won’t believe the results.
Setting a blog up in today’s world is a lot easier than it used to be and much easier than you might think. This is not a long technical process like many people would have you believe. Well this is no longer the case, as you will soon see as you read along.
if you follow along and take action, by the end you will have your very own blog up and running.
First I am going to explain the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org as there is often confusion. WordPress.com is a service which provides you with an up and running blog, you do not have to install it or maintain it but there are restrictions – You cannot upload any plugins or themes, you have to work with what is offered to you, and you are not allowed to have ads or banners on your blog, it can and does work well for many people but it is worth reading the terms and conditions before signing up. WordPress.org is a open-source self-hosted blogging tool which means you are free to do with it as you like with no restrictions and at no cost. This is what I will be showing you in this article.
1. Before you can get started with setting up your WordPress blog you will need to setup a hosting service with a domain name. I use BlueHost.com, but there are many other services available. Ask around to see if there is a service which you could sign up for, if not BlueHost are very competitive. If you are setting up a personal blog having your name as the domain name would be a good choice or you could come up with something imaginative. Now that you have your hosting service and your domain name all setup we can now start with the installation of WordPress.
2. Now that you have your hosting all setup, login to your domains Cpanel with the user name and password they provided you with. Once you have logged in to the Cpanel, scroll down the page until you find the ‘Software/Services’ tab, locate the ‘Simple Script’ icon and click it.
3. You will now arrive at the ‘Simple Script’ page with a list of web based applications which you can install. On the page you will see a heading called ‘Blogs’ and this is where you will see the WordPress application, click it to get started.
4. You will now be at the WordPress install page ready to start installing. You will now need to read through the page and click on the ‘Install Now’ button at the bottom of the page. Once you arrive at the install page you will see ‘Step 1: Installation Preferences’. he first drop down menu shows different versions of WordPress but you should always set this on the current version, but not a beta version. The next drop down menu is the domain you are going to be installing WordPress on. The domain name you chose when you setup your hosting service will appear in the drop down menu which can be changed if and when you have more than one domain name. You can also enter a directory name for which you would like to install onto, like I have done for example – my blogs web address is www.wordpresshowto.biz/blog. If you just want yourdomainname.com just leave the box blank. In ‘Step 2: Advanced Options’ enter the name of your site in the box provided in my case I will enter ‘WordPress How To’, now tick the box to ‘Automatically create a new database’. Final in ‘Step 3 Legal Information’ read and tick the box to agree, then tick the ‘Complete’ button.
5. Now Simple Script will install your WordPress blog onto your server and once done it will display your site URL, your login URL and finally your Username and Password. Your WordPress blog is now installed and visible, to view your newly installed blog just click on the site URL. You probably won’t think much of the look of your site at the moment but this can all be changed and you can have a lot of fun doing it, and again none of this is technical – it can all be done very easily and as I just said it’s also good fun.
In this WordPress How To Article I am going to be covering some of the basic strategies which can be carried out to help improve your blogs speed and traffic.
It is of great importance that your WordPress blog is optimized and optimized well when it is first installed. You need to keep in mind what your blog is going to be used for when you are installing it. You need to be attracting the right visitors to your blog and have your blog loading as fast as possible so as not to lose them and have the search engines find you as quickly as possible.
I find the best thing to do before you start installing your WordPress blog is to write a list of what you are going to be using it for, as there are some aspects which need to be optimal for its purpose on install. Before you can install your WordPress blog you will need to have a domain name which is keyword specific. You will need to know what market or group of people you are targeting, whether it’s for business or personal blogging. The first thing you will need to do before installing your WordPress blog is to get your self a hosting service and a domain name. This is why it is so important to do your research and know who you will be marketing to.
Once you have installed your WordPress blog, that’s great, but there is still much you can do to optimize your WordPress blog. Don’t get me wrong optimizing your blog to the fullest is not a difficult task, you just need to put in a little time and effort, but it will pay of in the end.
To help get the search engines to your site quicker there are a few simple tasks you can do. First you can install the ‘All In One SEO Pack’ plugin, enter your site details in the main settings and fill in the details every time you make a new post – you can also change the ‘Permalink Structure’ from the default setting to the custom settings /%category%/%postname%, this will all help with your rankings.
Site load times have now become a factor in Google, the faster your site loads the more love Google will give you and rank you higher than slower sites. The number of plugins you have installed on your WordPress blog can have an affect how fast your site loads – every time your site is accessed, WordPress has to check and load all the active plugins, therefore the less you have installed the faster it will load, whether they are active or not, so check all your plugins and delete any unnecessary ones. Graphics and pictures can considerably slow down your WordPress blog, check your graphic and pictures file sizes, you may be able to increase the compression on a jpg file for instance and make the actual image size smaller, also you could host all your pictures on image services like Flickr and EZS3, this will all help towards your blogs load time. Changing the number of posts which show up on your blogs homepage or only showing an excerpt of each post can improve your blogs load time and increase speed. Cleanup your database and changing the autosave function in the PHP will also help with speeding up your blog.
I hope this has given you something to think about. You can now see the importance of thinking and planning, before you jump in and setup a Worpress blog, but by applying a few simple strategies it will give your WordPress blog a better standing with the search engines and your visitors.
There are of course may other WordPress How To strategies which can improve your blogs speed and search engine rankings, but I hope the few I have laid out here will give you a head start.
There are many things that a personal trainer can do to get noticed by potential clients using the internet. The easiest way to begin:
1) Get your URLs lined up. The least for a new business is 3. First, make sure you’ve reserved your own name. If it’s not available, then as close to it as possible. If “JohnJones.com isn’t available, then go for an ID like JohnJonesFitness.com or something similar. If you have a business name, get that URL too. You may not use it as is, but it can be redirected to your primary website later. Get a local URL. For example, if you lived in Tampa, it might be www.TampasBestFitness.com Or TampaFitnessTrainer.com – this will come up on keyword searches. Even if your sites aren’t ready, get them on a hosted server right away. This will give time for the search engines to begin picking them up. You should have some content on them such as: Coming soon. Tampa’s best new fitness program. Wait until you see. . . etc.
2) Begin writing ezine articles that are information rich and that will help establish your expertise or authority in your field. In the bio section, link back to your web page or blog. There are many submission sites, but the best to start with, which is also no charge to register or use, is ezinearticles.com . Place those articles on your blog first, then submit to the service.
HINT: In the bio section don’t give your bio out first, but reasons to send them to your site, such as; “The 3 fastest ways to lose that tummy fat. Special report at. . .” The special report will be an opt-in, that is, they can sign up and by doing so will received your report, but you will capture their email address too for later marketing.
3) Start a blog right away. This will go along with your ezine articles. It’s the easiest thing to begin getting your name and info out to your marketplace. HINT: WordPress.org has become the blog site for marketers. It’s no charge and you can actually use WP as websites and/or blogs, which makes it easier for you to make changes, even if you arent a techie. This version of WP is an upload to your hosted site. It’s mostly automatic and almost anyone can do it.
